The Hon. Monique Smith, Ontario Member of Provincial Parliament for Nipissing, today announced the province will invest $7,531,738 in infrastructure projects and campus upgrades at Nipissing University and Canadore College. This funding is in addition to the $6.2 million in provincial and federal investments announced Monday to build a Canadore College campus in the Town of Parry Sound.

The investment breakdown is as follows: Under the Facilities Renewal Program Nipissing University will receive $280,700, and Canadore will receive $295,800. Under the Strategic Capital Infrastructure Program Nipissing University will receive $6,985,238.

Earlier this week, Canadore College received $3.1 million in provincial funding and $3.1 in federal funding to build a campus in the Town of Parry Sound in order to increase the post-secondary programming (including apprenticeship training) it is able to offer in the District of West Parry Sound. The project will be shovel-ready by December 1, 2009, and completion is set for March 31, 2011.

“With these substantial investments in our region, the Ontario government is giving Nipissing University and Canadore College the support they need to build and improve their facilities,” said Smith. “Working with Canadore and Nipissing, we’re ensuring students can learn in modern, state-of-the-art facilities.”‬ ‪

“Nipissing University thanks the provincial government for this funding and for their continued investment in post-secondary education as outlined in the Reaching Higher plan,” said Dennis Mock, Nipissing University President. “Our campus continues to grow, and as we move forward it is imperative that we enhance and update our learning environment to ensure that we offer our students the vibrant university experience for which we are recognized. This investment will assist us in meeting those needs.”

“The funding for our new Parry Sound Campus will allow us to more than double our annual enrolment in that community and provide very needed space, as we have totally outgrown our current leased facilities. Additional funding for deferred maintenance is also very welcome”, said Canadore College president Barbara Taylor. “In addition to the recent Heritage Fund announcement of $1 million for the learning commons in the Learning Library and last year’s $18 million for the Learning Library, we will see significant long term enhancements of the facilities we offer Canadore College students”.

Today’s investment is part of the nearly $800 million in capital funding that Ontario is providing to colleges and universities this year – a boost to the $780 million the province originally committed in its 2009 budget. Ontario is increasing its investment in postsecondary infrastructure to ensure that all colleges and universities across the province can offer students a high-quality education in new, modern facilities.

Ontario’s nearly $800 million investment will fund major infrastructure projects jointly supported by the federal government. Ontario is also going beyond that to provide funding to institutions through a new Strategic Capital Infrastructure Fund, as well as funding to help colleges and universities maintain and improve campus facilities.

QUICK FACTS

 Canada and Ontario are jointly supporting 49 infrastructure projects at university and college campuses across the province.

 Ontario’s Strategic Capital Infrastructure fund will support projects at an additional six colleges and universities.
