Ontario is helping repair and rehabilitate social housing projects in the Nipissing District that will enhance the quality of life and provide real opportunities for local families.

The province is investing over $575,024 to improve energy-efficiency, repair deteriorating exteriors and replace heating and lighting systems at 1,119 existing social housing units in 15 projects throughout the Nipissing District. The funding is part of a $100 million investment the province provided to 47 Municipal Service Managers across Ontario to repair social housing units.

As a result of this announcement, the Shibelith homes on Main and Foran Streets received the largest amount, $117,603 for roof-top air make up units.

Investing in social housing is part of Breaking the Cycle: Ontario’s Poverty Reduction Strategy, which will reduce the number of children living in poverty by 25 per cent over 5 years — lifting 90,000 kids out of poverty — by boosting benefits for low–income families and enhancing publicly–funded education.

“Families in the Nipissing District should live in homes that are safe, affordable and in good condition,” said Nipissing MPP Monique Smith. “By providing this funding for the repair or renewal of social housing, the government is helping Service Managers and social housing providers successfully manage their social housing properties.”

“The DNSSAB is very proud of our Nipissing District social housing provider efforts to keep their units and buildings well maintained. This investment of capital funding will ensure that the providers have the resources to make much needed improvements to their buildings,” stated George Jupp, Chair of the DNSSAB.

QUICK FACTS

- Funding was provided to Service Managers based on the number of social housing units in their area that are in greatest need of repair.

- The funding is expected to help repair about 55,650 units across the province.
