More good news for Education Centre's new library

A new state-of-the-art learning library at the Education Centre in North Bay will help attract more post-secondary students, enrich their learning experience and create several new jobs.

Nipissing University and Canadore College are building an advanced technology learning centre, called the Learning Commons, within their new Learning Library. The Commons will include networking equipment such as smart boards, e-classrooms and video conferencing equipment. Construction of this major project, which is expected to create several new jobs, is slated to begin this spring.

“The Learning Commons is a vital and exciting component of the new library project,” said Nipissing MPP Monique Smith. “This additional $1 million provincial investment brings the community closer to its goal of making the Learning Library a reality.”

“Our government is committed to helping provide students across the province with the resources and technologies needed to succeed in today’s knowledge economy,” said Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development and Mines and Chair of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).

QUICK FACTS

• Canadore and Nipissing are the only college and university in Ontario to share the same physical campus (referred to as the Education Centre).

• Through the Infrastructure and Community Development Program, the NOHFC is investing $1 million in the Learning Commons. This investment is in addition to $18 million from the Ontario government announced in January 2008 through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

• Since January 2005, the NOHFC’s Infrastructure and Community Development Program has invested more than $147 million in some 300 projects in Northern Ontario.
