West Ferris Secondary School juniors won the Canada-wide Youth Philanthropy Initiative competition, garnering $5000 for the Near North Palliative Care Network. The Youth Philanthropy Initiative is designed to help Grade 9 and 10 students become active agents of positive change by demonstrating community leadership through education and practical experience. Competitors thoroughly research the community organization of their choice and prepare a request for funding. Maria, Maddison and Carly chose to compete on behalf of the Near North Palliative Care Network (N/PS) which seeks to enhance the comfort, dignity and quality of life of individuals with a terminal illness, and to offer bereavement support throughout the community.

As part of National Hospice Palliative Care Week, the Near North Palliative Care Network proudly hosted these young women to celebrate their achievement. Their award-winning presentation was viewed by volunteers, Board Members, as well as a representative from the constituency office of Hon. Monique M. Smith, MPP.

All in attendance were impressed with their courage to present on behalf of a little-known organization, and not an obvious choice for such young students. The young women told of how their commitment to the organization grew as they became aware of the quality of service it provided. They were proud their fellow classmates took an avid interest and hoped this would raise the Network's profile in North Bay and area. Maria, Madisson and Carley will travel to Toronto for a leadership conference for the Youth and Philanthropy initiative winners.
