Starting this September, Early Childhood Education graduates can get a leg up and earn Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) and a bachelor of education degree (BEd) concurrently on Nipissing University’s Muskoka campus in Bracebridege, Ontario.

The university is pleased to announce the new Concurrent Education for ECE Graduates program available in Muskoka. It is the only concurrent education program in Ontario that is exclusive to ECE graduates.

Students enrolled in the program will earn an honours BA in Child and Family Studies as well as a BEd with Primary/Junior qualifications in four years of study. Typically, a concurrent honours BA and BEd requires five years of study; in this program, however, ECE graduates are given advanced standing.

Nipissing University’s renowned faculty of education is recognized as a leader in education. This year the faculty is celebrating the 100 year anniversary of teacher education in North Bay. ECE graduates entering the program will benefit from the innovative iTeach laptop education initiative, which incorporates the use of laptop computers and teaches how best to utilize technology in the classroom. Beginning this year, BEd students will be using Apple MacBook computers, making Nipissing’s faculty of education the first in Canada to employ both major computer operating systems, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows, on the same laptop.

A maximum of 40 students will be accepted into the new program each year. Qualified applicants not admitted to the concurrent education program will automatically be considered for acceptance to Nipissing’s BA in Child and Family Studies degree and the university’s unique Orientation to Teaching option.

“This is an exciting new program being offered in Muskoka. With the existing Child and Family Studies degree, and Nipissing’s highly respected faculty of education, there is a great deal of synergy existing for ECE graduates to enhance their education,” said Doug Parker, Nipissing University’s associate vice-president, Muskoka and graduate studies.
