SUDBURY – On Saturday night, local filmmaker Ed Regan triumphed over tough competition to win the Best Cinematographer award at Music and Film in Motion’s prestigious Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards in Sudbury for his work on the short film About The Girl.

The awards gala, held at Laurentian University’s Great Hall, saw the brightest talents in Northern Ontario’s arts scene competing for a handful of awards in what proved to be a celebration of creativity and artistic excellence while reinforcing the fact that Northern Ontario has a great deal to offer the music and film industries.

“We were thrilled just to be nominated for this award and seeing the competition, in not just our category but throughout the entire evening, really makes this an impressive accomplishment,” said Kevin Hoffman, the film’s director who was on hand to accept the award.

The film was a collaborative effort and while Regan was busy in North Bay working on a new project, Hoffman and the film’s writer/star and producer Michael Humble made the trip to Sudbury to represent the film.

“We really had no idea what to expect, especially since this was our first time attempting something like this and despite knowing how talented Ed is, having seen some of the other talent out there, it really is a surprise and an honour to have even been considered,” Humble said.

The film was shot in North Bay with no budget and no prior film experience for many of the participants involved. It started off as an experiment more than anything else to see if they could shoot a short film. Once they started shooting though, they realized that there might be a little more to the film.

“Mike wrote the script with very specific locations in mind and with Kevin directing it quickly became a collaboration between the three of us to see what sort of a film we could produce,” Regan said. “I don’t think any of us imagined that our efforts would result in such a wonderful acknowledgement of the time and energy we put into the film.”

The various contenders in the award ceremony’s film categories included everything from documentaries and narratives to Imax productions and features using ACTRA talent. It was inarguably an incredibly talented and diverse group of artists, some with as many 60 films to their credit.

“The award is definitely an honour, but it is also nice to be a part of such a passionate and professional community of filmmakers,” Regan said.
