The North Bay - Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) celebrated Earth Day with the launch of the 2009 PITCH IN initiative, Operation: Clean Sweep.

Since 1990, the NBMCA has partnered with the national PITCH IN office in British Columbia to recruit local volunteers and provide garbage bags to schools, townships and organizations from Mattawa to Parry Sound. This year, nearly 22,500 volunteers from the Districts of Nipissing and Parry Sound will join more than 3.5 million Canadians in communities throughout Canada for the weeklong event.

"The number of local volunteers increased by 5,000 this year," said Dale D'Allaire, the NBMCA's Naturalist. "While it's unfortunate that we still have so much litter on our landscape, it's encouraging to see increasing awareness of the need to care for and respect our natural environment."
