King George Public School had an exciting array of
activities for Earth Day. First, the students participated in environmental workshops developed by the North Bay- Mattawa Conservation Authority. Students learned about our local fish and the importance of protecting our water sources through a variety of hands-on activities.

Second, each student participated in our “Fish on the Fence” project by painting a wooden fish that will be mounted on the school yard fence creating a stream of fish swimming into school. There will be over 200 colourful fish installed on our fence as a reminder of both Earth Day and the importance of appreciating our water sources. This project is made possible through very generous donations of both time and materials: Chippewa High School Grade 10 School-to-Work students cut out nearly 250 fish from plywood donated by Lakeview TIM- BR Mart. The students will then use paint donated by Gateway Home Hardware to create beautiful designs to bring the fish to life.

Finally, the Green Earth Club of King George has been carefully monitoring the number of litterless lunches brought to school since March Break. Their initial goal of 100 litterless lunches was well surpassed and on Earth Day, they will be celebrating their success in having had over 1,000 litterless lunches! A special presentation will be made by the City of North Bay to honour their efforts in working towards reducing waste by using reusable containers to pack their lunches.
