The North Bay Police Service would like to caution the general public in the following:

Our Service is presently investigating a complaint of safety pins being found in a chocolate bar.

This complaint came into our Service from a citizen of Temiscaming today at 10 AM. It is alleged that a woman bought a charitable 100 mg. Hershey Almond chocolate bar from a retail business on Main St. W. at approximately 2:30 PM yesterday (Friday) on the 18th of April.

It is further alleged that when this woman brought the chocolate bar home she pricked her tongue with an open rusted safety pin found within the candy. At this point she inspected the bar closer and found another similar open safety pin within the chocolate itself.

This appears to NOT having been done after the packaging process.

Officers of our Service attended the retail business in North Bay and seized all of the charitable chocolate bars. They were then brought to the North Bay Airport to x ray the candy. None of the remaining chocolate bars were found to contain any metal objects and were returned to the retailer.

Our investigators have contacted the distributor of the chocolate bar for the Charity involved and they have also commenced their own investigation.

Although this might be an isolated instance, our Service would nevertheless caution the general public to verify any product before consuming it.

The adult female complainant did not receive any medical attention in this instance.

The North Bay Police continue to investigate this matter and are working with the distributor towards this effort.

Any information may be called in to our Service at 497-5555.

Anyone with information on these crimes is requested to contact Near North Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or 476-TIPS (8477) as well as via e mail at www.nearnorthcrimestoppers.com. All calls and e mails remain anonymous.
