Rebecca Geauvreau, Species At Risk Biologist with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources will be the guest speaker at the annual general meeting of The Greater Nipissing Stewardship Council (GNSC) on Wednesday, April 15, 7:00 p.m. at the Nipissing Community Centre (2381 Highway 654, Township of Nipissing).

John Thornton, Council Chair, stated “the Board has had several discussions regarding species at risk and potential projects that may benefit those species found within the greater Nipissing area. I anticipate this presentation will assist us with moving forward over the next year.”

The GNSC will also be officially unveiling the ‘Trail Guide to Healthy Living’, a comprehensive collection of more than 50 multi-use and publicly accessible trails located within the greater Nipissing area and Near North Region. This new guide, over a year in the making, was made possible through the aid of a $20,000 grant from the Ministry of Health Promotions and by working in close partnership with numerous local organizations, such as Discovery Routes.

Further, thanks to funding from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, a new version of the fisheries slot ruler will also be launched at the meeting, with a special presentation to local branch manager, Charles Elliott. The new ruler provides slot information for MNR’s fisheries Zone 11, which includes Lake Nipissing.

The GNSC is a charitable organization that partners with similar-minded groups and government agencies to implement environmental programs; provide information on conservation and sustainability; and to increase awareness of the ecosystem. The Council relies upon its members and volunteers and partner organizations to implement many of its initiatives. The greater Nipissing area encompasses Marten River to Trout Creek and Mattawa to Hagar, an area larger than Algonquin Provincial Park.
