If you are looking for insightful analysis of local history, then Nipissing University's Monastery Hall is the place to be this Saturday for the fourth Undergraduate Community/Oral History Conference.

Hosted by the Department of History and the Institute of Community Studies and Oral History at Nipissing University, the conference features a presentation by local historian Nestor Prisco, who will examine the early years and organization of Nipissing District as a judicial district.

Nipissing University students will be joined by students from Laurentian University to present their research on topics ranging from North Bay, Sudbury, Elliot Lake and Verner, to the first woman mayor in Canada, the advent of talkies, steelworker raids, the cooperative movement, and the growth of an urban neighbourhood. Three presentations will be in French.

Some of the topics specific to North Bay include community response to the Great Depression, the Irish, North Bay's Little Italy, female teachers in the public schools and Marching Together on the 12th of July, which will bring to life the days when as many as 17,000 Orangemen walked the streets of local cities on the Glorious Twelfth.

Full details on this year's program can be found on our web site at www.nipissingu.ca/history.

The conference runs from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. It is open to the public and free of charge.
