Ottawa - With upcoming changes to passport regulations, CAA North & East Ontario (CAANEO) is committed to keeping travelers informed so as to avoid any hassles and delays at the border this summer.

Beginning June 1st, 2009, the United States will put the final phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) into effect. This will require all Canadian citizens to present a valid passport or other accepted secure documentation when entering the U.S. at all land and marine ports. This law came into effect for air travel on January 23, 2007.

Canadian citizens will be required to present one of the following valid WHTI-compliant documents when entering the United States by land or water: a passport, a NEXUS card, a FAST card, or an enhanced driver*s license (EDL) or identification card (EIC) from a province or territory where a U.S. approved EDL/EIC program has been implemented.

Although Canadian citizens entering the United States by land or water can use other WHTI-compliant documents, they must still present a valid passport in compliance with U.S. air exit requirements when leaving the U.S. by air.

*CAA remains committed to advocating for border crossing regulations that facilitate the safe, secure and efficient clearance of travelers,* said Korey Kennedy, Manager of Public and Government Affairs for CAANEO. *As such, our CAANEO Travel Centers can readily provide Members and the general public with Canadian passport applications and photos.*
