Nipissing Area Scouting youth will celebrate more than just fast Beaver Buggies, Kub Kars and Scout Trucks when they gather at Motor Madness 2009, Saturday April 4 at the
College Education Centre cafeteria.

The annual event, which will draw about 200 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers from Nipissing District and northeastern Ontario, will also celebrate the 75th anniversary of Nipissing Area Scouts Canada.

Beaver Buggies are woodcraft racing kits that Beavers, boys and girls ages 5 to 7, assembled, painted and raced. Kub Kars are wood model racing cars designed, assembled
and modified by Cubs, boys and girls ages 8 to 10, from a block of wood. Scout Trucks are wood model 18-wheeled semi-trailers designed, assembled and modified by Scouts, youth
11 to 14.

While racing their vehicles to high speed glory, Scouting youth will:

- Examine 75th Anniversary Time Capsule items prepared by participating Beaver, Cub, Scout and Venturers sections. Before the end of 2009, the items will stored and held until 2034, when Nipissing Area will celebrate its 100th anniversary.

- See the Nipissing District Human Rights Hall of Fame Award for organizations, awarded to Nipissing Area Scouts Canada for its history of excellent service to the community.

- Get their pictures taken by North Bay community photographer Tim Salidas, known for his public photographic displays of community events. The photos of each section -- Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers -- will be part of a special Scouting display at North
Bay Mall.

Opening ceremonies begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 4 with the start of Scout Truck racing. Beaver Buggy racing will begin at 10 a.m., and the Cubs will take over the track for Kub Kars at 1 p.m.

Kub Kar racing has its origins in California during the 1950s. The first rallies were held in North Bay in the early 1970s, the first Nipissing Area rally was held in 1980, the first Scout Truck Rodeo in 1997, and the first Beaver Buggy Bustout in 2005.

Nipissing Area Scouts Canada was organized in 1934 as Nipissing District of the Boy Scout Association of Canada, though First North Bay Scout Group sponsored by Trinity
United Church was the first chartered group in Nipissing in 1921 (and is now the oldest), and Scouting activities. such as dog sled racing at what is now the plaza on King Street, were reported in the local news during the First World War.

The Scouting movement, started by Lord Baden-Powell, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2007.

Admission to Motor Madness is free and open to all.
