Kashechewan – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was assisting Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) in Kashechewan First Nation on March 18, 2009. At 10:00 p.m. two officers responded to a call about an individual lying on the ground beside a residence in the community.

The officers located the individual and placed him into protective custody for his own safety, in a NAPS vehicle. While on route to detachment, the man became unresponsive, and he was immediately driven to the nearby Kashechewan Medical Centre.

While waiting for medical personnel to arrive, the man’s condition deteriorated and the officers began CPR. He was revived and his condition seemed to improve. The patient was transferred by medical personnel to the hospital in Moose Factory via air ambulance at 2:00 a.m.

The following morning, medical staff advised police that man’s condition had deteriorated overnight and he was awaiting a transfer to a Thunder Bay hospital.

The Province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has been notified and has invoked its mandate. Further inquiries should be directed to SIU Communications at (416) 622-2342.
