Provincial support through the gas tax is getting more people out of their cars and onto public transit.

This year, North Bay Transit will receive $1,164,852 in gas tax revenues, Hon. Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing announced today.

“North Bay is again benefiting from the gas tax, allowing North Bay Transit to make significant improvements,” Smith said. “With this investment, the city will have received $5,079,692 in gas tax funding from the province over the last five years.”

Ontario shares two cents per litre of gas tax revenues with municipalities for public transit. The government has provided municipalities with more than $1.3 billion in gas tax funding since 2004, including more than $321 million this year.

The McGuinty government’s investments in public transit have helped expand and improve transit services in North Bay and across Ontario - increasing ridership by 102 million passenger trips since 2003. This took 85 million car trips off our roads.

“This is exactly the sustainable funding all municipalities have been looking for and appreciate,” said North Bay Mayor, Vic Fedeli. “In North Bay, we have used the money to enhance our transit service to make taking the bus a great alternative. We will continue to invest this Gas Tax money in our transit system.”

“Gas tax funding helps municipalities deliver public transit here in North Bay and across the province,” said Transportation Minister Jim Bradley. “Our record investments in public transit strengthen Ontario’s economy by helping people get to work, school, and shopping while reducing gridlock.”
