To put the list out magazine officials obtained annual crime data from Statistics Canada for municipal police services with the 100 largest populations in the nation.

In a news release related to the release of the list officials explain that 2007 rates were used for six crimes that included homicide, sexual assault, aggravated assault, vehicle theft, robbery, plus breaking and entering -- then the Maclean's team calculated the percentage difference from the national rate for each of the six crimes.

“In consultation with StatsCan, we gave each crime equal weights and standardized the rates to obtain an overall score that measured each area's percentage difference from the national rate.”

North Bay’s aggravated assaults are high with a 10th place ranking, but run in the middle of the pack for robberies (55th) and sexual assaults (59th). The city fared better when it comes to Break and Enters (82nd) motor vehicle thefts (98th) and the city was in good company with Sault Ste. Marie and 33 other communities having a 0 percent murder rate. Sudbury placed 20th in the murder category.

The magazine says Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Regina have the nation’s meanest streets in Canada.
