20 lucky students get a jump start at Canadore

Twenty lucky students who will be attending Canadore College this fall '09 got a kick start to their post secondary education Wednesday when their names were drawn for a $500 entrance scholarship.

Canadore President Barbara Taylor had the privilege of drawing the names and tells BayToday that anyone considering one of the school’s programs should not have financial barriers stand in their way of accessing post secondary education.

“It is part of our mandate to serve our communities, our district, but also our province,” she explains.

“And as part of that if someone is qualified and they want to be here we want to make sure they are here, so this is a significant way of supporting students and ensuring that they are coming to Canadore.”

“It is also a way of setting our selves apart.”

Taylor says the alumni association got on board and truly see the value of supporting students from start to finish during their post secondary careers.

“They are very, very generous donors to scholarships and bursaries, and they really got on board with moving some of those scholarships to entrance scholarships.”

“It is very competitive out there for colleges right now and we recruit just under 60 percent of our students from outside of our region so this is just one more way that we show that at Canadore we go the extra distance for students.”
“And it helps them make their decision and in many cases that is Canadore College.

To be eligible, students had to confirm acceptance to the Canadore program of their choice earlier in the year.
