OTTAWA - The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for FedNor, yesterday met with the mayors of Northeastern Ontario’s four largest communities - Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay and Timmins - to discuss how the federal government can help communities overcome the difficult challenges brought on by the economic downturn.

During his meeting with the four mayors, Minister Clement outlined how the new programs and measures announced as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan will have a direct and positive impact on the economy of Northern Ontario.

The minister also emphasized how the government of Canada is working to maximize opportunities for businesses and communities, especially those hard hit by the recession.

“Canada’s Economic Action Plan is a clear and decisive response to what Northern Ontario residents are expecting from their government in these difficult times,” said Minister Clement.

“New initiatives such as the community adjustment fund, the infrastructure stimulus fund and the Recreational Infrastructure Canada initiative are important tools that will help us keep the economy of Northern Ontario moving.”

“My officials at FedNor will continue to work closely with community and industry leaders to ensure that our efforts meet the specific needs of the North,” added Minister Clement. “With our increasing support for FedNor, this government is delivering results for the people, communities and businesses of Northern Ontario.”

Support for this approach corresponds with the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan to strengthen Northern communities.

By supporting people, communities and business through its programs and services, FedNor is opening doors and building futures for a prosperous Northern Ontario.
