Students from across the North Bay Parry Sound district celebrated Oscar style Friday night as the Motion celebration screened the works of budding film makers.
Motion was a creative video competition for all high school students in the North Bay Parry Sound District hosted by the Youth FACT Committee of the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit. Students were asked to produce a creative yet educational video about tobacco, physical activity and nutrition, and/or alcohol and substance misuse.
“First of all we were thinking about what teens like to do and how we could get our message across to them,” explains committee member Paige Shemilt.
“And we thought well the Academy Awards that is something a lot people watch and enjoy and look forward to happening every year. So we decided we were going to make a video competition because it is fairly easy to do for a teen it’s entertaining for them plus they get to learn something new while they are doing it.”
Students focused on the three categories and they had to cover at least three facts about the issue the picked.
“They had to be between 30 seconds and 2 minutes long and the groups could be between 2 and 5 people,” says Shemilt.
Shemilt says the response from students was outstanding and saw submissions from each corner of the district Sturgeon Falls, Parry Sound, Mattawa and Almaguin.
Each category had a winner with the ultimate grand prize of $500 plus a matching $500 was awarded to their home school for the group video that best encompassed the message.
“So it is a pretty nice grand prize and we decided to make it up like an Oscar night because the Academy Awards were just last week it is good timing,” says Shemilt.
“And it just makes it fun and a reason to dress up have some fun with it and learn some new things too.”
“We are going to try and make this an annual event with different categories each year.”
