Ontario is helping people strengthen their trade-related skills to prepare them for successful apprenticeships.

In 2009, the government is providing $357,553 to Canadore College and Collège Boréal to run pre-apprenticeship training programs in North Bay. The programs will help up to 32 individuals enter into apprenticeships. Partners in this project include Job Connect.

“Canadore College and Collège Boréal are both leaders in skilled trades training in North Bay,” said Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing. “It is important to have the right technical background, as it paves the way to succeeding in apprenticeship training.”

Pre-apprenticeship training helps people develop trade-specific knowledge, job readiness skills and employment experience that people looking for work as apprentices will need.

The province is investing $9.5 million in pre-apprenticeship training grants this year, supporting 46 projects.

“The Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program has proven so popular over the past eight years that we’re increasing funding this year to help even more people to train for skilled trades,” said Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities John Milloy.
