With the recent snow accumulation and expected drop in temperature, North Bay Fire and Emergency Services is reminding residents that when clearing snow from their driveways and sidewalks, it’s important to shovel an area around the fire hydrant to ensure clear access for responding firefighters. In addition residents are asked to check snow accumulations around exit doors and furnace vents. For building owners and landlords, it’s imperative that all exit doors, stairways and fire escapes remain free of snow.

Intake and exhaust vents for furnaces and heating appliances should be kept clear of ice and snow accumulations to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide build-up inside the home. Ensure you have a carbon monoxide (CO) detector on every level of your home.

With the temperature expected to plummet many of us will be plugging in our cars. Please keep in mind the following safety tips when using a block heater:

• Ensure the extension cord is the correct gauge and designed for outdoor use.

• Examine the extension cord for damage, fraying, exposed wires or pinching where the hood of the vehicle may come in contact with the cord.

• Ensure the outdoor outlet has GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) protection.

• Use of an approved timer will limit the number of hours the block heater is in use.

• Check the block heater for damage such as cracks or corrosion.

• Refer to the manufacture’s instructions.

• Consult with a qualified service technician if you have concerns.
