Association hosts national conference in North Bay “Gateway To Success”

In its beginning, it was the National Secretaries Association. Then it became Professional Secretaries International, and now we know it as the International Association of Administrative Professionals® (IAAP).

With headquarters in Kansas City, MO, the IAAP provides opportunities for personal and professional development, leadership training and international networking.

Locally, the North Bay Chapter has progressed from offering seminars and training to office professionals on weekends and evenings to holding a full day of professional development with high-profile professional speakers during Administrative Professionals week each April. Included in this day is the very popular Administrative Professionals and Executives Luncheon attended by the mayor and hosted by EZ Rock radio personalities. The luncheon has been an annual event since 1989 and is co-sponsored by the North Bay & District Chamber of Commerce.

This year, for the first time in its 32-year history, the North Bay Chapter of IAAP will be hosting the Canada Divisions’ Conference in North Bay from May 21 to 23, 2009, at the Best Western, Lakeshore Drive, North Bay. This conference will be attended by close to 200 people from across Canada and some guests expected from the United States.

The purpose of the conference is to elect the officers of the three Canadian Divisions - Eastern Canada, Western Canada and Ontario - and to provide the members with opportunities for professional development and networking.

While North Bay Chapter members are the hosts of the conference, Kathy Fogal, CPS/CAP, International Director, Canada District, will chair the Opening Ceremonies on Thursday evening and the Canada District meeting on Saturday. On Saturday morning, the Division Presidents, Andréa Griffin, Eastern Canada Division from Dartmouth, NS, Sharron Buttler CPS/CAP, Ontario Division from Ottawa, ON, and Beth Turner, Western Canada Division, from Vancouver, BC will hold their respective Division meetings and election of officers.

International President Barb Horton, CAP, from Vancouver, BC, will be a guest of honour at this conference. Barb is just the third Canadian to rise to the position of International President, and the North Bay Chapter is delighted to have her in attendance. Her theme “Excellence in Action” will be evident throughout the conference.

The Opening Ceremonies on Thursday, May 21, will see the Ontario Provincial Police Colour Guard lead in the head table guests and members will present flags from all Canadian provinces. Greetings will be extended to the delegates by North Bay Mayor Vic Fedeli, Monique Smith, M.P.P. and Anthony Rota, M.P. This will be followed by an “Evening of Welcome” which will showcase North Bay.

A full day of professional development is planned for Friday, May 22, during which members and guests will participate in seminars on Collaborative Work on Electronic Documents, The Magic of Influence and Persuasion, The Greatest You, Networking ‘Par Excellence’, and Learning How to Get Along with Co-workers in an Intergenerational Workplace. Seminar leaders include Phil Cowcill and Carole Laperrière, both professors from Canadore College, Rosita Hall and Anthony Lindan, professional speakers from Toronto, and Penny Tremblay from Northern Lights in North Bay. Registrations for the Day of Professional Development are open to local administrative professionals who wish to attend.

The Greek Gala on Friday evening at Zorba’s and the closing banquet with a “For Better or For Worse” theme will be sure to entertain and delight the delegates and guests.

The North Bay Chapter members are thankful for the overwhelming support they received from the business community as the planning for this national conference was in progress.
