This is a 10-karat diamond celebration year in North Bay, and Nipissing University is the place to be.

Throughout 2009, Nipissing will be leading the charge to celebrate 100 years of teacher training in North Bay. A century ago, in 1909, the North Bay Normal School opened its doors for the first time, launching a legacy of teacher education in this city, in existence today as Nipissing’s renowned faculty of education.

“This is a momentous occasion for North Bay and the university, and a terrific reason to celebrate teachers” said Professor Jack Jones, lead organizer of the centennial celebrations. “Since the Normal School opened in 1909, roughly 17,000 teachers have learned their profession here in North Bay. Those teachers have gone on to teach students around the world. We estimate that more than 12 million people have been taught by a teacher who studied in North Bay. It is staggering to imagine what a wonderful impact education in North Bay has made on the world.”

Nipissing is hosting the Celebrating a Century Dinner on Saturday, January 31, to mark the 100 year anniversary of teacher education in North Bay. The dinner features guest speaker Dr. David Booth, recipient of the Dr. Elizabeth Thorn Chair in Literacy, and the launch of a new book, Walking the Talk, putting theory into practice, by Nipissing professors Dr. Warnie and Dr. Carole Richardson. It takes place at the Wall beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tickets cost $40. Call 705-474-3450 ext 4016, or email [email protected] to reserve your tickets.

Booth is the recipient of several awards in Canada and the United States for his classroom teaching, contributions to language and literacy, the arts in education, and his picture books for young people. He received an honorary Doctor of Education from Nipissing University in 2008.

Other events include the Celebrating a Century launch on January 27 at Nipissing from 10:30 a.m. – noon, a Teachers Meet ‘n Greet at Nipissing’s downtown location (100 Main Street East) on January 28 from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m., and a Teaching Research Open House at Nipissing University on January 29 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.

As well, this summer, July 16 – 19, Nipissing will welcome all alumni of the Normal School, the North Bay Teachers’ College and Nipissing University back to campus for the Celebrating a Century Homecoming.

“Homecoming is an opportunity for our alumni to reconnect with each other, with Nipissing University and with the City of North Bay while celebrating the university’s history and the 100 year tradition of teacher education in North Bay,” said Michelle Courville, alumni relations officer at Nipissing University. “We have a number of events planned for alumni, including a barbecue by the pond, a family day at the waterfront and an evening cruise on the Chief Commanda. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
