Ottawa - With snow falling and the temperature dropping significantly for the better part of the past week, it's time to face the facts: winter is here and so are the treacherous driving conditions that come with it. CAA North & East Ontario (CAANEO) would like to remind all motorists to stay safe this winter by having four winter tires installed on their vehicle.

"Although winter tires give vehicles added traction throughout the winter months, motorists should still be mindful that they must adjust their driving habits according to the weather conditions," said Korey Kennedy, Manager of Public & Government Affairs for CAA North & East Ontario.

"Additionally, consumers should ensure that they purchase winters tires marked with a pictograph on the side-wall of a peaked mountain with a snowflake, which certifies that the tires meet or exceed industry established winter traction performance requirements."

As the weather turns colder, the rubber in all season tires stiffens, reducing traction and control. However, winter tires are made to maintain elasticity in temperatures as low as -40C, thus providing superior traction and handling. Additionally, deeper tire treads allow for greater control in snow, ice or slush. As of December 15th, 2008, all passenger vehicles registered in the province of Quebec must be equipped with four winter tires. Although winter tires are not yet legally required for Ontario motorists, Transport Canada strongly recommends that all motorists install winter tires in order to stay safe in cold and slippery conditions.

It is a common misconception that installing only two winter tires on the front or rear of a vehicle will provide all the additional traction needed for driving in cold and icy conditions. This assumption is false; installing four winter tires is the only way to ensure optimal steering and control throughout the winter months. Additionally, motorists should never mix tires with different tread patterns, internal construction and size, as this can negatively impact the handling of one's vehicle.
