Queen's Park - Ontario Progressive Conservative Community and Social Services Critic Sylvia Jones (Dufferin-Caledon) called on the McGuinty Liberals today to release the regulations which would allow Registered Disability Savings Plans (RDSP) to be exempt from Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) and the Ontario Works (OW) program.

Through a short press release, Sunday morning the Liberals announced that they would be adopting Jones' private member's bill introduced in June, which would prevent the clawback of ODSP and Ontario Works payments as their own.

"While this announcement signals that the Liberals support the principles of the bill I created, I still want to ensure to present and future families that future governments or ministers can't simply change this without consulting the Legislature first," said Jones. "Once these changes are made and families are saving the money their children need, it can't be undone behind closed doors. There must be legislative changes that are voted on, not just regulatory changes made in cabinet," added Jones.

Jones questioned Meilleur today in the Legislature, asking for reassurance that the changes won't be made in the backrooms of Queen's Park, but on-the-record in the Legislature. Meilleur skirted around the issue, before saying that the changes will not be made in the Legislature, and she will not table the regulations for interested organizations and groups to review and provide valuable input.

"My bill aimed to make changes to ensure that parents are able to save money for their children in the long-term," said Jones. "I have been working for months with the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario, Community Living Ontario, the Canadian Mental Health Association and OASIS, the Ontario Agencies Supporting Individuals with Special Needs along with hundreds of families to ensure what would be best for Ontario families living with disabilities."
