Former North Bay Mayor passes away

Former North Bay Mayor and popular veterinarian Jack Smylie has died.

Smylie, 82, provided superior care for over 53 years to area family pets and farmers’ livestock. He also had a distinguished career in local politics serving on North Bay City Council in a number of positions including mayor, deputy mayor and councillor before retiring from politics in 2000.

Named Kiwanis Citizen of the Year in 2000, Smylie was involved in the community serving on Nipissing University’s Board of Governors, chairman of the North Bay Police Commission and was a public school board trustee. Smylie also helped establish Canadore College and the North Bay Health Unit.

Smylie leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Delma Smylie (nee Paterson) four children, Emily-Ann, Gay, Paul and Clark and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at St John Anglican Church on December 1st at 2pm.
