The Ontario SPCA announced that the North Bay and District Humane Society has been selected as one of the recipients awarded a portion of a $5 million Infrastructure Renewal Grant. The grant, dispersed amongst the Ontario SPCA and its more than 50 Communities, is targeted to capital improvements, enhancing and modernizing communication tools and information technology, and improving animal welfare services in northern Ontario.

The one-time capital grant was made possible by the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and derived from surplus funds in 2007.

The North Bay and District Humane Society underwent an extensive application process, made available to the Ontario SPCA’s entire network of more than 50 Communities, to allocate the funds and received an allocation of $203,550. Many of the projects are capital improvements, creating local job opportunities.

“The Provincial Government’s one-time capital grant of $5 million recognizes the lifesaving work that we do, and the importance of strengthening animal welfare across the province,” says Jim Sykes, Chair of the Ontario SPCA Board of Directors.

The North Bay and District Humane Society will be using this funding towards improvements to the shelter building, the creation of an animal exercise area, construction of a storage building, improvements to the shelter grounds, upgrading IT and communication equipment, installation of security equipment and promoting humane education.

“This is great news. The board is very pleased with the results of our grant application. This one-time funding will allow us to complete much needed infrastructure and capital improvements that would otherwise not be possible. However, continued donations from our benefactors are crucial to the ongoing operation of the Society” says Michelle Walker, President NBDHS.
