Astorville, ON – The East Ferris Community Centre opened the doors to its newly renovated centre today, thanks in part to a $75,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing, joined OTF representative Carol Ann DiBartolomeo at a ribbon cutting ceremony held to celebrate the grand opening.

“The staff and volunteers at the East Ferris Community Centre provide a wide range of programs and activities which are incredibly important for our community,” said Hon. Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing. “This OTF grant will provide a safer sport and recreation facility for the entire community to enjoy.”

In March, the OTF provided the Township of East Ferris with a grant to replace the arena boards, glass and gates at the East Ferris Community Centre. The Centre houses the only arena between North Bay and Mattawa and between North Bay and Powassan. The newly renovated arena will be a safe venue for all community members to engage in a variety of sports and recreational activities.

“The East Ferris Community Centre and arena has always been a major focal point for our community,” said Mayor Bill Vrebosch. “The installation of the new boards, gates and glass will make all ice activities much safer. We were very pleased to have received funding for the improvements to our arena. Thanks to our MPP Monique Smith and the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their assistance and continuing support.”

The Township of East Ferris has a population of 4400. The Township has an outdoor skating rink; soccer field, library; fitness centre; Community Centre with hall, arena and curling club in Astorville; and a community hall in Corbeil where seniors participate in organized weekly activities.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario. For over 25 years, the Foundation has supported the growth and vitality of communities across the province. The OTF continues to strengthen the capacity of the volunteer sector through investments in community-based initiatives. For more information, please visit www.trilliumfoundation.org.
