With Ohio firmly tucked away in the blue column the national American networks have declared that Barack Obama has beaten John McCain to become the first black president.

With Ohio firmly tucked away in the blue column the national American networks have declared that Barack Obama has beaten John McCain to become the first black president.

McCain is expected to take to the podium in Phoenix, Arizona shortly to concede defeat.
