Officers of the North Bay, Mattawa and Powassan OPP Detachments completed their Fall Seat Belt Campaign on Sunday, October 12th, 2008. This year’s theme focused on “The 95% Challenge” with the objective being to have 95% of all drivers and passengers in Ontario wearing a seatbelt by 2010. This strategy complements Transport Canada’s Road Safety Vision 2010; an initiative designed to reduce deaths and injuries on Canada’s roads through a variety of enforcement measures and public education initiatives.

This year’s public education initiative which commenced on Wednesday, October 1st and concluded on Sunday, October 12th, 2008, was later than in previous years. It was selected to complement Operation Impact; a 72 hour police enforcement initiative which targets aggressive drivers, drinking drivers, and those who fail to a wear seatbelt or properly secure child passengers in an appropriate child restraint.

During the 12-day campaign (October 1st to October 12th, 2008) 24,591 vehicles were checked where 255 people were charged with seatbelt violations. North Bay OPP had no fatalities where the occupant was not wearing his seatbelt.

Of vehicles checked, 265 were specifically checked for proper use of child seats including booster seats resulting in 5 child seat charges. Check with the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit for Child Restraint Clinics at (705) 474-1400 ext 2327 or visit their website at www.nbdhu.on.ca.

A total of 243 traffic related moving violations charges were handed out. These charges included seatbelt, speeding and aggressive driving offences. Another 8 people were charged with Drinking and Driving (5 resulted in an Impaired charge and 3 with a 12-hour suspension). No vehicles were impounded as a result of racing . Police investigated a total of 6 motor vehicle collisions of which one was personal injury collision (minor injuries) and 4 involved wildlife.

Police continue their effort 24/7/365 to ensure everyone gets the message.
