Ontario is helping an important green power project in South River get on the grid.

A $450,000 investment from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is helping the Village of South River redevelop a former hydroelectric power station located within the municipality. This project is part of the government’s drive to green the province and keep it economically competitive and prosperous.

QUOTES

“The McGuinty government is committed to helping northern communities move forward on projects that will create new energy and generate revenue,” said Northern Development and Mines Minister and NOHFC Chair Michael Gravelle.

QUICK FACTS

• Until the mid 1960s electricity used by the residents of South River was generated by a privately owned generating station. When Ontario Hydro connected the village to the provincial grid the local generating station was deemed to be too small to be efficiently operated within the grid system and was taken off line.

• Once re-established, the power station will generate 7.8 megawatts of electricity at full capacity.

• Since 2005, NOHFC’s Northern Energy Program has approved funding for 110 projects totalling an investment of over $5.7 million.
