North Bay - Commencing Wednesday, October 1st, 2008, officers of North Bay, Mattawa and Powassan OPP Detachments will actively take part in this year’s Fall Seat Belt Campaign which runs until Sunday, October 12th, 2008. Seatbelt usage remains a traffic safety priority for the OPP.

Officers will check that every occupant is safely ‘buckled-in’. Ongoing public education and enforcement will give us a winning combination in reducing the rate of unbelted vehicle occupants. Using seat belts is the single most effective way to reduce vehicle related injuries and fatalities.

The most likely cause of death for a person between the age of 3 and 35 is a motor vehicle collision. Of the 444 fatal collisions on OPP patrolled roads last year (2007), 111 persons were killed because they weren’t wearing their seatbelt. To date in 2008, 52 of 225 people killed in collisions were not wearing seatbelts.

North Bay OPP cluster charged 158 people between January 1st and July 31st, 2008 with seatbelt violations. It takes less than five seconds to fasten your seatbelt.

‘Buckle Up’ Seat belts save lives!
