North Bay - For 24-hours, starting on Wednesday, September 10th 6 a.m. and concluding on Thursday, September 11th, 2008 at 6 a.m., officers of North Bay, Mattawa and Powassan OPP will actively take part in Operation Corridor.

Operation Corridor is an annual border to border road safety initiative that focuses on high visibility patrols and education opportunities. This year’s Operation Corridor will target commercial motor vehicles concentrating on aggressive driving because of their significant potential for serious injuries and death. All commercial motor vehicle drivers who demonstrate a lack of respect for those fundamental ‘rules of the road’ and compromise their safety as well as that of others will be the subject of police attention.

Officers in our detachment area will focus on commercial motor vehicles travelling on the Highway 11 and 17 corridor. The officers will be committed in enforcement and will target violations such as speeding, follow to closely, unsafe lane change, other hazardous moving violations, seatbelt compliance.

Last year Operation Corridor ran from September 13th to 14th, 2007 and the Northeast Region saw 1 fatality involving CMV as a result of a motor vehicle collision. Further, of the 90 CMV checked 18 were charged for speeding, 1 follow to close, 3 seatbelt, 5 other hazardous moving violations and 4 out-of-service.

Understand that commercial carriers, are in fact, among the safest drivers on the road; however, when they are involved in collisions the results are usually more serious as is the impact on the economy and highway delays. Hence, this 24-hour campaign is in keeping with our focus to reduce injuries and save lives on Ontario’s highways.
