Anthony Rota, Federal Liberal candidate for Nipissing-Timiskaming, says that he has hit the ground running now that an election campaign is officially underway.

Together, Mr. Rota and his team have already begun putting up signs and billboards throughout the riding, and are also preparing for the official opening of two campaign offices in the riding later this week.

“On Sunday, Stephen Harper sought the dissolution of Parliament and forced upon Canadians a third federal election in four years,” says Mr. Rota. “Not only did this come at a time when most Canadians did not want another election, but it also broke a promise he made to Canadians when his Conservative government introduced fixed election legislation that would have otherwise seen us heading to the polls in October 2009.”

Nevertheless, Mr. Rota says that he and his Liberal colleagues are well prepared for the fight that lies ahead. “Over the next several weeks, you will hear from two parties, both with very distinct visions of Canada,” says Mr. Rota.

According to Mr. Rota, the Liberal Party platform will focus primarily on building a “Richer, Fairer, Greener, Canada”. “In other words,” he says, “our priorities will revolve around the issues that matter most to Canadians; such as building a stronger economy, enhancing public health care, and protecting our environment.”

Locally, Mr. Rota says that he remains committed to promoting regional economic development initiatives through programs such as FedNor, improving local infrastructure, supporting arts & culture, and addressing social issues such as poverty, literacy, and aboriginal rights.

According to Mr. Rota, “The people of Nipissing-Timiskaming deserve a Member of Parliament who understands the issues that matter most to them, and is committed to backing up his words with concrete action. Over the past several years, I have had great success in bringing people together from all political stripes, and from all parts of the riding, in order to achieve common goals. I firmly believe in the effectiveness of using a collaborative approach to accomplish great things for the people of my riding.”

On Sunday morning, Prime Minister Harper visited the Governor-General at Rideau Hall and asked for the dissolution of Parliament. A general election will be held on Tuesday October 14th, the day after Thanksgiving.

Joe Sinicrope, the Conservative Candidate for Nipissing-Timiskaming, is ready to hit the campaign trail.

“Stéphane Dion has forced the Prime Minister’s hand” Sinicrope said. “Mr. Dion has refused to co-operate in any way with the government during the fall session of Parliament.”

“This election will be about Stéphane Dion and his carbon tax. This is a tax that will raise the cost of living for everyone” Sinicrope said. In particular, he said the carbon tax would be especially hard on northerners, who rely more heavily on fossil fuels. “It’s totally unfair to those who live in the north.” He added that with the economy so uncertain, it would be a terrible mistake to raise taxes on Canadians.

Sinicrope said that his team is more than ready, and he is looking forward to a spirited campaign that will focus on leadership, tackling crime and the economy.

“I think that Canadians aren’t very impressed with Stéphane Dion. The Prime Minister and our party have delivered results for Canadians over the last two and a half years and we’re are ready to do more.”
