The Government of Canada is committed to improving the economic outlook for Northern Ontario by investing in projects that support innovation, small business growth, information and communications technology (ICT), and youth retention efforts.

The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister for FedNor, today announced a FedNor investment of more than $1.7 million, through its Northern Ontario Development Program, in support of 11 projects in the Nipissing–Timiskaming region.

“Today’s announcement reinforces our government’s commitment to the hardworking families and businesses of the Nipissing–Timiskaming region,” stated Minister Clement. “This investment will help expand economic development, provide greater opportunities for small business owners and entrepreneurs, and encourage our youth to stay here at home in Northern Ontario.”

This investment supports FedNor’s strategic approach of helping Northern communities make the transition to a knowledge-based economy. FedNor is meeting key Northern priorities by helping young graduates find full-time employment through FedNor’s Youth Internship Program, providing support to the agricultural and forestry sectors, and ensuring that Northern communities have access to broadband and ICT services.

As reaffirmed in Budget 2008, the Government of Canada is making investments in people, knowledge, modern infrastructure and a sound and efficient financial sector to provide the foundation for global success.

“On behalf of the citizens of North Bay and the communities that make up Nipissing–Timiskaming, I truly welcome this strong show of support from FedNor,” said North Bay Mayor, Vic Fedeli. “These projects will be of great benefit to North Bay and its neighbouring communities as we continue to grow and develop this region.”
