Ontario is partnering with conservation authorities and municipalities to ensure safe and sustainable drinking water.

The McGuinty government is providing $457,082.74 to the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority for a variety of work on source water protection announced Nipissing MPP Monique Smith.

“This investment will help conservation authorities continue their work of coordinating drinking water source protection planning and related activities,” said Smith. “It will let them do technical work with municipalities, support the local source protection committee, as well as inform and consult the public.”

Under the Drinking Water Source Protection partnership, the government provides support and funding for studies, data collection, local engagement, information management and other activities related to municipal drinking water sources.

“This partnership has enabled us to gather new data and to further our understanding of the way water moves through our watershed. The data will also provide input to the local source protection committee as they develop a plan to protect the source water for five area municipalities,” explains Marc Charron, Chair of the North Bay – Mattawa Conservation Authority.

“Since 2005, the Ministries of Environment and Natural Resources have provided funding to assist conservation authorities in support of drinking water source protection,” said Natural Resources Minister Donna Cansfield. “This is all part of our work to fully implement the Clean Water Act.”
