Callander will host the first Regional Conservation Exhibition September 11-13, 2008. Open to the general public across the greater Nipissing area, this annual event will provide individuals, families and businesses alike with access to hands-on information and products that reduce energy costs and make our local resources more sustainable.

According to Callander’s Mayor Hector Lavigne, environmental sustainability is something we all need to know more about. “We can all do more in terms of conservation, protecting and ensuring the resources we depend on are there for us and future generations for years to come.”

The Regional Conservation Exhibition is being coordinated by Callander’s Sustainable Community Committee in partnership with the Greater Nipissing Stewardship Council. The Council is currently involved in a number of active projects aimed at protecting and preserving resources in the Greater Nipissing area.

Keynote speaker, Dr. David Pearson, Co-Director of the Ontario Science Communication Program and a Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Laurentian University, will share insights and information on environmental issues affecting northern Ontario on Thursday, September 11 in the Auditorium at St. Theresa's School in Callander.

The program includes speakers providing information on several environment and sustainability topics, with numerous exhibitors showcasing their products and services inside the Callander Community Centre and on the grounds, between and during the various presentations. Exhibits include environmentally friendly products, vehicles, building products, energy monitoring devices & programs, agricultural products, lifestyle information and good advice on taking care of the environment.

Robert Kidd, the Exhibition’s Convenor and a member of Callander’s Sustainable Community Committee, noted that the Locavores, sponsors of the 150 KM diet, will be active and providing local food during the exhibition.

“There is a lot of food grown in and close to our communities”, said Kidd.

“Supporting area producers makes our communities more sustainable and reduces carbon emissions produced by transporting imported food from hundreds and thousands of miles away.”

Weekend activities will run from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday evening and from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Callander Community Centre, located on the corner of Swale Street and Callander Bay Drive.

The Sustainable Community Committee (SCC) was appointed by Callander Council in early 2007 to explore ways of maintaining Callander and its environs as a desirable place to live and as a tourism destination point. The Exhibition is the SCC’s major event of the year.
