With the Canada Day long-weekend approaching and gas prices steadily increasing this summer, CAA North & East Ontario (CAANEO) is providing motorists with some helpful and inexpensive tips to maximize their vehicle's fuel-efficiency:

*Plan your route. Combine errands and try to avoid heavy traffic areas, rush hour traffic, road construction, and hilly terrain to save fuel and time.

*Use your air conditioner sparingly. In 'stop-and-go' traffic, air conditioner use can increase your fuel consumption by up to 20 %. At 1.30$ a litre, that's an extra 26$ for every 100 litres of gas purchased!

*Keep your engine, steering, transmission and brakes properly maintained to optimize fuel efficiency. Ensure that air filters are inspected. A poorly maintained engine can increase fuel consumption by up to 50%.

*Check your vehicle's tire pressure every month. Under-inflated tires cost Canadian light-duty vehicle owners almost 643 million litres of fuel annually.

*Lighten your load, and avoid carrying non-essential heavy items. If there is something you don't really need, don't pack it. Remove roof racks unless they are absolutely necessary.

*Reduce your speed and drive sensibly! Aggressive driving practices such as speeding, sudden braking and rapid acceleration can decrease fuel efficiency by up to 33% at highways speeds.

*Car pool or use public transportation when available.

By following these simple tips, Canadian drivers can maintain personal mobility while minimizing their vehicle's impact on the environment as well as their wallet.

With the rising price of gas comes the question - where is all the money going? The answer may surprise you. Between 30 to 40% of what Canadians pay at the pump goes directly to taxes. CAA is committed to lobbying both the federal and provincial governments for an increase in gas revenue spending on bettering the conditions of Canadian roads and highways.

"CAANEO is cognizant of the impact that the rising cost of fuel is having on our Members and the overall Ontario and Canadian economy," said CAANEO Manager of Public and Government Affairs, Korey Kennedy.

"By incorporating these simple tips into their driving habits, motorists will be able to maximize their vehicle's fuel consumption, thus saving money, while also mitigating the impact of vehicle emissions on our environment."

For over 100 years, the Canadian Automobile Association has provided travel, Emergency Road Services, insurance, and advocacy for its Members. CAA North & East Ontario continues to be the leading membership organization by recognizing and promoting its heritage and integrity in the community, while maximizing Members' value.
