In September of 2006, the Near North District School Board was pleased to announce that Widdifield Secondary School in North Bay was selected as one of 27 launch sites across the province to offer the Specialist High Skills Major program (SHSM). The implementation of this new initiative will culminate on Wednesday, June 25th, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. with ten students receiving this unique designation during a special convocation ceremony.

Specialized High Skills Majors offer students greater choice for customized, career-focused secondary school learning in a specific sector of the economy that meets their particular interests and talents. Focused learning experiences help students explore, identify and refine career goals and make informed decisions related to post secondary goals. Students are able to recognize the connection between secondary school learning and future employment by establishing relationships and networks in their chosen career field. Students to gain confidence in their ability to be successful, refine their skills and work habits, and see the connection of their studies to the real world and their future career, in addition to earning sector-recognized certifications.

In addition to meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, these Widdifield graduates have attained sector recognized preparatory credits, skills and knowledge.

These graduates are among the first in the province to receive this unique designation recognizing their specialization in Arts and Culture.
