Students of Tammy Chassé’s grade six class at St. Alexander School each won an iPod Shuffle, courtesy of North Bay Hydro, for collecting the most incandescent light bulbs in The Great North Bay Hydro Light Bulb Exchange program.

North Bay Hydro Chief Operating Officer, Todd Wilcox said, “We are proud to continue our tradition of conservation initiatives and we were excited to have our local youth participate in our Conserving Together programs.”

“May 25 to May 31 was Energy Conservation Week in Ontario so we felt it was an excellent time to undertake this initiative and to engage local youth.” Said Wilcox.

The week long conservation contest saw grade six students from King George, Dr. MacDougall, Laurentian, W.J. Fricker, Sacred Heart, St. Joseph’s and St. Alexander participate in a project designed to encourage the use of compact fluorescent light bulbs instead of incandescent. Replacing incandescent with fluorescent bulbs produces significant savings both in energy consumption and cost.

The participating classes collected a total of 2597 bulbs during the weeklong contest with St Alexander alone collecting an impressive 1023 bulbs.

The collection of 2597 incandescent light bulbs translates into a savings of 57,965 kwh’s, the equivalent of powering 57 average homes for one month.

“ We would like to thank North Bay Hydro for the opportunity,” said Tammy Chassé, grade six teacher at St. Alexander School. “It was really great to have my class working cooperatively towards a goal and be successful. This is an exciting project supporting our in- class efforts with hands on learning in a fun, proactive and productive way. This is the sort of teaching opportunity that leaves a lasting impact on the participating students.”

“We wanted this to be a fun experience for the kids and we wanted to reward their efforts by recognizing the winning class with a cool incentive.” Wilcox said. “ As far as North Bay Hydro is concerned, all the classes are winners.” added Wilcox.

Certificates of recognition will be given to all classes that participated.
