People across Ontario can stay close to home yet still step into nature this summer by visiting one of the province’s conservation areas listed in Conservation Ontario’s newly published Your Guide to Ontario’s Conservation Areas. The North Bay – Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) will be distributing both copies of the 64-page, full color guide and free Off mosquito lamps to the public on Thursday, June 12, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm (or while quantities last) at three local RBC branches.

“Experiencing nature is often the first step to appreciating our environment,” explains Brian Tayler, General Manager of the North Bay – Mattawa Conservation Authority. “With gas prices rising, people may be reconsidering their summer travel plans. We want area residents to be aware of the diversity and the large number of conservation areas located both in our own backyard and across the province.”

Ontario’s 36 Conservation Authorities collectively own and operate close to 250 public conservation areas. Conservation areas play an important environmental, educational and recreational role in Ontario and contribute to the physical and mental wellbeing of the more than 4.5 million Ontarians who visit them each year. Most conservation areas offer year-round activities such as hiking, fishing, camping, swimming, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Some conservation areas even offer more extreme activities such as snowboarding and rock climbing.

Closer to home, the NBMCA is responsible for 15 unique conservation areas. The conservation areas range from Eau Claire Gorge on Highway 17 to the Laurentian Escarpment located at the top of the ski hill. All of the NBMCA’s conservation areas have free admission 365 days of the year.

Additional information on the 15 local conservation areas will be available alongside the guides and mosquito lamps distributed by NBMCA staff at the two RBC branches in North Bay (105 Main Street and Airport-Stockdale Road) and the RBC branch in Callander (5 Main Street). The Off mosquito lamps were provided by SC Johnson.

Additional information and a searchable database for Ontario’s conservation areas are available online at www.ontarioconservationareas.ca. Local information regarding the NBMCA’s 15 conservation areas is available at www.nbmca.on.ca.

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) was founded in 1972 by the Province of Ontario and the NBMCA’s 10 member municipalities. A non-profit organisation, the NBMCA works closely with the public to ensure the environmental health of the region’s watershed. The NBMCA is one of 36 Conservation Authorities who are members of Conservation Ontario.
