Four southern Ontario men have been fined $1,000 each for illegally shooting and abandoning a bull moose near Finlayson Lake.

Andrew Clarkson, 53, and Sergio Rasetta, 48, both of Brampton, pleaded guilty to allowing an adult moose to spoil and have been fined $1,000 each. Daniel F. Clarkson, 25, of Brampton, and Oliver P. Dyck, 40, of Innisfil, both agreed to donate $1,000 to the local Game and Fish Club in lieu of their fines for their role in the offence.

Court was told that in May 2006, Ministry of Natural Resources enforcement officers, acting on an anonymous tip from the public, discovered the abandoned bull moose in McLaren Township, near Marten River.

The investigation found that on October 9, 2005, the group was hunting near Finlayson Lake when Daniel Clarkson unlawfully shot a bull moose. After Dyck had gutted the animal, the group decided to hide and abandon the moose, which allowed the meat to spoil.

Justice of the Peace Michel Moreau heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sturgeon Falls, on March 31, 2008.
