The Honourable Monique Smith, Minister of Revenue and MPP for Nipissing, along with 14 of her Cabinet colleagues from Ontario are participating in a bilingual joint cabinet meeting with the Province of Québec today at the Fairmont le Château Frontenac in Québec City.

“With Québec as our largest internal trading partner, this meeting is very important in solidifying our already long, historical relationship,” said MPP Smith. “By focussing on delivering results on key issues such as the creation of a new economic space, climate change, work force mobility, transportation and energy, we are strengthening the existing partnership between Ontario and Québec.”

The idea for this joint meeting originated at a session held at the Ontario Legislative Assembly in November 2007. At that time, Premiers McGuinty and Charest agreed to pursue measures to further strengthen the relationship between the two provinces. The provinces of Ontario and Québec remain Canada’s two largest economies and together represent nearly two-thirds of all Canadians. By working together to build a prosperous regional economy that attracts businesses, workers and investment from around the world, the province of Ontario can have one of the strongest and most successful economies in the world.

As a gesture of commemoration, on Sunday evening Premier McGuinty unveiled a plaque presented to Premier Charest and the Province of Québec to mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of Québec City.
