On Sunday May 11th, Mothers’ Day, The Nipissing Transition House invites you to MOTHERS AT THE FRONT – a rally at the Waterfront, from 1:30-3:00 –to raise awareness about violence against women.

Contrary to popular belief, Mothers’ Day was not conceived and fine tuned in the boardroom of Hallmark! Julia Ward Howe organized a day encouraging mothers to rally for peace after the Civil War. Mothers have started to reclaim Mothers’ Day as a day of activism. We, at the Nipissing Transition House, are reclaiming Mothers’ Day to fight the battle of violence against women, and the children in their care, and the stigma and silence surrounding the subject.

There will be music by “Six Degrees of Unity”, refreshments, flowers will be available, and – most importantly – an information package to raise awareness about violence against women. By raising awareness, the Nipissing Transition House aims to be part of creating a community in which women can live free from violence.

We encourage mothers and their families and friends to join us – to re-kindle the true meaning and spirit of Mothers’ Day.
