The students and staff of the Near North District School Board continue to support environmental activities that make their schools and communities a better place to live in. In Celebration of Earth Day on April 22, the students are participating in many activities inside and outside their classrooms.

The following list is just a sample of what some of the Near North District schools are doing this week to spread awareness on the conserving our resources and taking care of our earth.

No doubt many communities will see the staff and students out and about this week with their bright yellow garbage bags in hand, as many schools will be participating in the Pitch-In Canada campaign. They will be not only cleaning up their own school yards, but spread out to their neighbouring communities and assist in litter collection.

While, M.T. Davidson, Phelps Central, Argyle, Nobel and Tweedsmuir schools will challenge students to take part in litterless lunches, Magnetewan Public School will compost this week.

Mapleridge P.S. will be handing out seedlings for planting in conjunction with their Forest of Reading Program.

After the Earth Hour exercises, some schools, like F.J. McElligott Secondary, Mattawa District and Britt Public Schools have decided to turn off lights in natural lighted areas.

Argyle PS will collaborate with the Argyle Horticultural Society, (AHS), this week. Master Gardener, Susan Craig, will perform a presentation on potscaping. The grade 8 students will plant petunias in containers donated by AHS and at the end of the school year will be bringing these pots home as part of their graduation farewell. In addition, AHS will supply recycled containers for all of the other students to plant seeds for tomato plants and flowers.

During the last two weeks, J.W. Trusler’s grade 1 students have been reading their own “Environmental Promises” over the P.A. announcements, as the school prepares for Earth Week.

The NNDSB and its Environment Committee are very proud of how our students continue to lead in promoting and engaging in green programs that make a difference.
