The McGuinty Government is providing $807,356, in one time funding, to help improve public transit in North Bay, Hon. Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing announced today on behalf of Transportation Minister Jim Bradley.

“The McGuinty government continues to invest in public transit in North Bay,” said Smith. “By working together, we are creating greener transportation options and fostering the next generation of economic growth.”

Today’s public transit funding for the City of North Bay is part of the economic stimulus package announced in the 2007 Fall Economic Update. The funding is aimed to assist public transit systems to modernize equipment and facilities and keep them in a state of good repair. Purchases can include:

• conventional and specialized transit vehicles, bus engines, bus shelters
• hybrid buses — more fuel-efficient and lower-emission vehicles
• security equipment — security cameras and terminal security lighting
• fare collection systems, communications systems and GPS systems.

Since 2003, Ontario has committed $6,650,316 to help the City of North Bay improve and expand its transit system. These investments have resulted in a new Transit Terminal on Oak Street, newer buses and more para busses.

“We are very grateful to the Province for this transit funding which will be used to support our Transit fleet and facilities. Initiatives to increase Transit ridership and improve accessibility are positive steps for the community and for the environment," said Mayor Vic Fedeli.

“Quality public transit service reduces single-occupant automobile trips, cutting traffic congestion and commuting times, and providing cleaner air,” said Bradley. “Our government is determined to help transit systems across Ontario ratchet up service. That’s why we are sharing the provincial gasoline tax with transit municipalities and have committed billions of dollars to build more and better transit systems.”
