The Canadian Cancer Society’s 2008 Relay for Life event is in full swing as Scotiabank, the event’s lead corporate sponsor, helped the local chapter kick off the major fundraiser Wednesday.

Confirming that the event will once again take place at 22 Wing CFB North Bay, Event Chair Cheryl Neault told folks that this year’s event is ambitious with a target to raise $240,000.

Supporting Neault, fellow event volunteer Marlene Woods pointed out that organisers hope to sell 2,500 luminaries, recruit 105 teams, and have 300 survivors participate in the survivors’ lap.

Ashley Robinson, who at the tender age of six developed lymphoma, encouraged well wishers to participate in the event telling the group that she knows firsthand the pain and struggle of fighting cancer.

As a reminder of her fight Robinson wore a long chain of bravery beads, which she gathered over the four short months of her chemotherapy, and she told the crowd that each bead in signifies each test, therapy, or procedure she endured during her battle.

The event takes place June 20th and 21st.
