Mattawa OPP is currently investigating the theft of six caskets taken from the location previously known as Smith’s Funeral Home located on First Street in Mattawa, Ontario.
The funeral home has been closed for sometime now and the building is presently owned by the Caisse Populaire Ltée and Century 21 Real Estate. A few weeks ago, it was noticed that these caskets were missing. Police believed that sometime in January 2008, thieves broke into the building damaging the back door. Six brand new caskets were removed with an estimated value totaling over $12,000.
The investigation is continuing and police are asking if anyone has any information in regards to this incident to please call North Bay OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or if you wish to remain anonymous contact the Near North Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
