Nipissing-Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota is encouraging local businesses and organizations to participate in the Canada Summer Jobs initiative for 2008. “This program allows organizations that provide important community services to offer highquality work experiences for students,” says Mr. Rota.

The application period for the 2008 program officially begins on February 1st, and Mr. Rota is encouraging local businesses, organizations and non-for-profit groups to submit proposals for consideration.

Mr. Rota says that he has communicated with Service Canada officials directly, and that they have provided valuable information regarding the criteria that these proposals will be judged upon. “In particular, proposals that focus on local priorities such as cultural initiatives, social services, tourism, community health and well-being, and administrative support will all be given strong consideration,” says Mr. Rota.

The Canada Summer Jobs initiative provides funding for not-for-profit, public-sector, and small private-sector employers with 50 or fewer employees to create summer job
opportunities for young people 15 to 30 years old who are full-time students and intend to return to their studies in the next academic year.

According to Mr. Rota, “Canada Summer Jobs funds quality career-related student work experiences that deliver important community services for children, families, people with disabilities, seniors, and others.”

“The initiative will focus on local priorities and will achieve tangible results for both students and their communities,” says Mr. Rota. “My staff and I look forward to working with applicants to ensure that their proposals meet the necessary requirements of the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, and that they are in the best position possible to receive funding.”
