In Ontario the costs and consequences for being
charged with "over .08" are significant and will keep you from having a regular driver licence for two+ years. Consequences for a first time offender include:

- Immediate 90-day Licence Suspension

- One-year driving prohibition/suspension

- Fine (not less than $600)

- Assessment for alcohol use and Back on Track program (user pays cost of $475 + gst)

- Ignition interlock device for one year (once licence reinstated)(approx. $1300)

- Licence reinstatement fee ($150)

- Criminal record

- Legal Costs (your legal counsel) ranging from $2,000 to $10,000

- increased insurance premiums (minimum of $5,000 annually for at least three years)

- Minimum costs for a first-time offender with no collision (equal sign) $20,000

According to Ontario Community Council on Impaired Driving 's (OCCID's) Executive Director Anne Leonard, "most of the public are unaware of the full consequences for the charge of "over .08" and about half are unaware that at "over .05" you are also taken off the road. Only 32% realize that being caught and convicted will cost a driver at least $20,000", and she continues, "only 43% realize that all convicted impaired drivers face a one-year period of an ignition interlock condition on their licence." OCCID has been surveying the public for the last seven years to determine their knowledge of the many new sanctions and consequences for impaired drivers.

Ontario Community Council on Impaired Driving (OCCID) is a registered charity operating in Ontario since the late eighties. OCCID has hosted the arrive alive DRIVE SOBER(R) campaign since that time; the campaign shares resources and information with community groups, police, public health, schools, businesses and broadcasters to raise awareness of impaired driving and how to prevent it.

Sponsors and partners of arrive alive DRIVE SOBER include The Beer Store, Ministry of Transportation, and Pilot Insurance.
